I didn't know I had hearing loss until the day I got that ear infection.

The infection was actually discovered by my son's pediatrician,

who reassured me that everything was fine with my child.

'Oh, good,' I replied, 'because I was really worried. It even made my ear hurt.'

My father's car broke down on the highway,

so I had to walk down the street, as he insisted.

In my mind, being late for school and standing outside the classroom as punishment was always more terrifying than death.

My father might agree with me.

'What's your favorite color?' the girl who lived next door asked me. We were trying to take a nap together.

'I like a lot of colors, except red,' I replied.

'If my mom's dead, I will be dead too,' she said solemnly.

'Same,' I responded, 'and what is your favorite color?'

'I like all kinds of green,' she said.

She was five, and I was eight."

Every time I tried to water a plant on a sunny day, my grandmother would yell at me,

'You are killing them, you are killing them!' My grandmother yelled at me about everything.

There was an experiment with two plants in a classroom: one received daily praise, and the other was cursed every day.

The cursed one didn't die but remained very small.

Is that why my grandmother was so tiny?
